Mantle pseudo-isochrons revisited
نویسنده
چکیده
The 2.0 Ga pseudo-isochron age inferred from the mid-ocean ridge basalt 207Pb/204Pb against 206Pb/204Pb diagram is re-examined on the basis of a statistical box model of mantle processes. Simple equations are presented which relate the pseudo-isochron age to the decay constants and distribution of heterogeneity ages in the model mantle. In turn this age distribution is simply related to the history of melting. The equations are in good agreement with results from mantle convection simulations. The equations are different from but related to, and more general than, those found previously for mean box models. While the pseudo-isochron age does not signify a mean age in the usual sense, in the model presented it is related to a “generalised mean” over the distribution of heterogeneity ages. If a constant melt rate over the Earth’s history is assumed, a mean remelting time of 0.5 Ga is required.

Continuation-based Computation of Global Isochrons
Isochrons are foliations of phase space that extend the notion of phase of a stable periodic orbit to the basin of attraction of this periodic orbit. Each point in the basin of attraction lies on only one isochron, and two points on the same isochron converge to the periodic orbit with the same phase. Global isochrons, that is, isochrons extended into the full basin of attraction rather than ju...
متن کاملHf-w Chronology of the Angrite Parent Body: Timing of Accretion, Core Formation and Magmatism
Introduction: Key issues regarding the early evolution of planetesimals include the timescales of accretion, core formation, and magmatism. The short-lived Hf-W system has proven particularly useful as a chronometer for these early planetary processes. For instance, W model ages for magmatic iron meteorites reveal that core formation in their parent bodies occurred within ~1 Myr after formation...
متن کاملAge, spreading rates, and spreading asymmetry of the world’s ocean crust
[1] We present four companion digital models of the age, age uncertainty, spreading rates, and spreading asymmetries of the world’s ocean basins as geographic and Mercator grids with 2 arc min resolution. The grids include data from all the major ocean basins as well as detailed reconstructions of back-arc basins. The age, spreading rate, and asymmetry at each grid node are determined by linear...
متن کاملOn the use of Fourier averages to compute the global isochrons of (quasi)periodic dynamics.
The concept of isochrons is crucial for the analysis of asymptotically periodic systems. Roughly, isochrons are sets of points that partition the basin of attraction of a limit cycle according to the asymptotic behavior of the trajectories. The computation of global isochrons (in the whole basin of attraction) is however difficult, and the existing methods are inefficient in high-dimensional sp...
متن کاملMIXING IN NUMERICAL MODElS OF MANTLE CONVECTION INCORPORATING PLATE KINEMATICS
The process by which subducted lithosphere is mixed by mantle convection is investigated in numerical calculations. The results show that the observed isotopic heterogeneity of mantle sources and their ancient (1-2 b.y.) apparent ages are consistent with convective mixing. Passive tracers, which are introduced below "trenches," are efficiently dispersed, but nonetheless, heterogeneities in trac...
